FIFA U20 World Cup Qualifiers in Cayman
The Cayman Islands has been selected to host the 2002
FIFA Under 20 World Cup Qualifiers competition for
Group B.
This prestigious tournament will
bring two regional U20 National Teams from Jamaica
and Puerto Rico to our shores to compete with our
own National U20 Team for the World Cup Qualifiers
semi- finals. Scheduled to run from Wednesday August
28th – Sunday September 1st, 2002 the matches
will take place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
The Association is very pleased
and would like to extend their sincere thanks to CONCACAF
for the opportunity to host this tournament. CIFA
President, Jeffrey Webb, has nothing but confidence
in the team’s ability, “The team has shown
great commitment to their training and the coaching
staff, Marcio Maximo, Gillie Seymour and Locksley
Haylock much dedication. I have no doubt that the
U20 Team will come out on top. We are expecting an
outstanding performance from them.
The tournament would not be possible
without the continued support of Corporate Sponsors
CUC and Texaco and the Ministry of Community Services,
Women’s Affairs, Youth and Sports.
This is not the first time for
CUC and Texaco but a continuation of the support they
have extended to football over the years. We thank
them both for their commitment to the development
of Cayman’s Youth and is tremendously grateful
to Dr. the Hon. Frank McField and his ministry for
their support in this regard.
The initiative of the Minister
of Sports, for the establishment of a National Football
Academy and the designation of national team players
as Pro-social Agents is an important step for football.
It is a wonderful incentive for our players to be
role models for other aspiring young people.”
