CONCACAF Gold Cup Finalists
In November last year the Cayman
Islands National Football Team played host to Group
B of the CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifiers. The group included
some of the regions toughest such as Martinique and
Cuba along with the Dominican Republic.
Of the two teams qualifying from
this group - Cuba and Martinique - Cuba has moved on
to the finals scheduled for the USA this summer while
Martinique still has a shot if they can beat Honduras
and Trinidad in the Interzone Playoffs scheduled for
April 23rd – 27th in Martinique.
Trinidad & Tobago are chasing
their sixth appearance in the Gold Cup finals; this
would make their fifth in a row. Martinique has appeared
in the final round twice, while Honduras has played
in every Gold Cup final since it’s inception in
1991 when they lost the final to the USA on penalties.
The region’s two automatic
spots for the finals were captured by Cuba and Jamaica
when Jamaica beat Haiti 3:0 at home and Cuba defeated
Trinidad & Tobago 3:1 in Trinidad.
The qualifiers include defending
champions USA, Canada and Mexico from the Northern Zone;
Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador from the Central
Zone; Jamaica and Cuba from the Caribbean and invited
teams Brazil and Columbia. The top two from the Honduras,
Trinidad, Martinique playoff will also compete in the
finals.
