Scholars’ Women Lead Again
By: Kenisha Morgan

Following closely in the footsteps of their predecessors Scholars Women’s Team walked away with both the FA Cup and DHL League titles for the 2003-04 football season.

A feat which the team has accomplished some six times now, Scholars women have taken home the trophy consecutively 1997-2001 and again for the 2002-2004 seasons.

With talented players such as Michelle ‘Mousey’ McField, who has taken home the CIFA Goal Scorer of the Year award for the past two years, Areilla Smith CIFA’s 2003 Rookie of the Year, Cassandra Bodden, Tamara Welcome, Sade Wood, Martha Godet and Kathryn Murray it is no wonder Scholars continues to excel on the field.

Just last year the club celebrated its 25th anniversary with an Awards Banquet at the Grand Pavilion where it recognize several of these young ladies for their committed contribution to Scholars’ football program.

Coach Greg Ebanks who has been with the team since its inception in 1994 says they currently have about 20 players with an average age of 22 years. “We field about five players that are over 30 years but there are always at least five players under 21 on the field.” His passion for women’s football has not gone unassisted, though he does not have a continuous assistant coach he has had input from Armando Ebanks, George Smith, Phillip Hydes and Anthony Smith.

He makes it a point to always stress aspiration for excellence to his players and uses the T.I.P.S. method to prepare them for Competition - T for the Technical preparation and development, I for inspiration, P for personality development and S for speed work.

The next project on his agenda is to start an under 15 girls team. Citing fellow West Bay Club Future FC’s success with such a plan, he believes starting with the youths will help Scholars achieve its long-term development goals for its women’s program.

Scholars’ track record of taking home six league championships and four FA Cup championships over the last ten years undoubtedly speaks of the high caliber of players selected to represent the club. When asked about his selection process Coach Ebanks stressed that there are no special requirements for girls or ladies to join but, that discipline, a love for the game and some football experience is a plus.
