Foster’s League Semi-final Round Preview
By Kenisha Morgan
The past twenty-seven weeks in the Foster’s National League
has offered one exciting result after another. But now the league
is finally down to the wire and the final four – FC International,
Latinos FC, Scholar International and North Side SC must battle
to determine the final two and eventual league champion.
With less than three weeks to go the four teams are carefully
plotting strategy and preparing for their semi-final rounds.
This could be the last chance for each to get a foot in the
door and move on to the Grand Finale on Sunday April 25th.
After so many weeks of hard work to get here, the stakes are
high and everyone has a lot to loose.
Scholars International, last season’s champions, are
taking nothing for granted especially considering Latinos’
determined resolve since the start of the season to take home
the title. The team is now more focused than ever putting
in the extra work needed to complete final preparations.
Beaten only once since September by Western Union FC, Latinos
took home every other match either coming out the victors
or drawing the match. With a new President and Cuban coach,
Juan Rives, the team has certainly come a far way from the
bottom of last season’s standings to the top of its
zone, second only to Scholars International, this season.
North Side SC who also floundered at the bottom of Zone B
last season bounced back with admirable resilience to walk
away Zone B champions this year. They were not to be fooled
with or taken for granted. Of fourteen matches North Side
took home 8, drew 4 and lost only 2. North Side player Sean
Mellaneo says right now his team is engaged in light practice
matches to help the players stay focused.
Both North Side and Latinos FC credit their coaches and their
commitment to training for their success this season.
FCI who added Carson Fagan, Gary Whittaker and Carlos Welcome
to their roster last season had a shot at the final four play
offs but lost out to George Town who won 10 matches last season,
one more than FCI. As such taking the 3 points they would
have needed to challenge GTSC for a spot in the semi-final
round. This time around FCI plans to make no mistakes –
they have come too close to allow the championship to elude
them yet again.
Fred Ebanks, player for FC International says, “Bring
it on” to their opponents Scholars International SC.
Sean Mellaneo of North Side SC added “…Only two
teams can move on. The ball is round and the best teams will
win.”
