April 20, 2010

By Beverly Melbourne

The 2010 Cayman Islands football Association (CIFA) Women’s FA Cup semi finals will be played on Friday April 23 and Saturday April 24, in the evening at two separate venues.

On Friday Scholars International takes on Sunset FC at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay at 7:00pm and at 7:30pm on Saturday defending champions Women United meets last season’s beaten finalists Elite SC at the Camana Bay (DART) Play Field in Camana Bay.

The final is set for Sunday May 2 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex at 5:00pm.

President of CIFA Jeffrey Webb who conducted the draw said that the Women’s program had faced a lot of challenges and that was what made them so successful.

“The challenges faced by the Women’s program was the reason for their success, we need growth and continuity for future development for the women program. There is no instant coffee in football it is the development process that brings out the success,” Webb pointed out.

Tina Foster representative from Women United said that Women United had some challenges relating to injuries received from the recent CONCACAF finals in which some of the team members were participants. This she pointed out was behind now and they were getting the job done slowly but surely.

“We had our challenges with injuries but we have managed to build a good team now that everyone has healed from the injuries picked up during the Under 17 competition. We are ready to defend the championship facing any team that comes forward,” Foster stated

Meanwhile, Alan Purvis Coach of the Sunset team was just as confident and boasted about Sunset’s position in the league tables.

“We are confident in winning this title that we held a few seasons ago. Hopefully the women will do their best in keeping the Sunset flag flying high despite the situation that the men’s team is in at this time. We can get pass Scholars International and go on to the finals regardless of who we meet there.” Purvis commented briefly.

Chris Douglas Coach of Scholars International had his piece to say and mentioned the victory they had over Sunset adding that they wanted to meet Women United at the semis.

“We had a good win against Sunset recently and are prepared to face them at the semis; however, it would have been better if we had drawn Women United at this stage, as we wanted to play them. We are looking forward to play Women United at the finals,” Douglas said.

Women United defeated Future 3-1 in the preliminary rounds while the other four teams were given byes leading up to the semis.

Chelsea Brown took the lead for Women United in the 15th minute while Shennel Gall netted twice in the 85th and 93rd minute. Breeann Wright scored the consolation goal for Future in the 49th minute.

Presently in the Women’s League standings Sunset are leading with seventeen points followed by Future SC with eight points, Elite are next with five while Women United and Scholars International are trailing with four points each.
