Captain of the Senior National Football team Thomas Elliot injured

Thomas Elliot national defender and captain of the Cayman Islands Senior Men’s National Football team received serious injuries last Sunday evening during a game between Sunset and Roma at the East End playing field in the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Fosters National League competition.

Elliot tackled Roma’s Omar Mundle and won the ball, Mundle went for the ball and during a fifty fifty attack on the ball Thomas got injured and was taken off the field of play. In less than fifteen minutes the ambulance was on location to rush Elliot to the George Town Hospital where he was admitted with a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula.

One his first visitor at the hospital was President of CIFA Jeffery Webb who expressed his disappointed with Elliot’s present circumstance. Webb wished him a speedy recovery and assured him that any assistance he needed the association would be more than happy to assist.

Vice President of Sunset FC Paul Macey who was also at the Hospital wasted no time in uttering how devastated the entire club was resulting from the mishap.

“The entire club is devastated by the news. This has affected us a lot and it has placed a damper on us which will remain for the rest of the season. It will be hard for us to keep going for the rest of the season,” Macey moaned.

This burly defender who works at the Butterfield Bank (Cayman Islands) Ltd is captain of the Sunset Football team as well, he will be out of competitive football for as long four month. He had surgery on Monday and the operation was successful. As soon as the cast is removed he will be undergoing therapy to complete the healing process.

Elliot is in high spirits and says he hopes all will be well in time for his participation with the national team in the Digicel Caribbean Cup competition due late August.

“It is unfortunate that this has happened at a time when my team needs me to help them stay in the top eight teams eligible for the new National Premier League competition to be introduced next season.”

“I am going to adhere to the medical instructions given to me to have a smooth recovery from my injuries, staying strong for my return to the game which will be even better than before. Digicel Caribbean Cup is set for August of this year. I hope to be physically fit and ready for those games,” he said.”

Elliot is presently one of the Cayman Islands National team top defenders; he captained the team against Bermuda recently in the road to South Africa World Cup 2010 qualifiers when the Cayman Islands lost 4-2 on aggregate in one of the best ever performances put on by the island. The Cayman Islands jumped eight places up on the FIFA ranking after the first leg ended 1-1 and lost 3-1 in the return leg.
